CPT 99234 - Observation/Inpatient Care, Same Day (Low)

Description & Explanation: This code is used when a patient is admitted to inpatient or observation status and discharged on the same calendar date.

• Requirement: Requires two distinct encounters (one for admission, one for discharge) by the same provider/group.

• Duration Rule: Most payers (including Medicare) require the stay to be > 8 hours but less than 24 hours to use this code range. If < 8 hours, use Initial Care codes (99221-99223).

• MDM: Straightforward or Low.

• Time: 45 minutes.
