H53.013 - Deprivation Amblyopia, Bilateral
Short Definition
Bilateral deprivation amblyopia, a visual developmental disorder affecting both eyes caused by visual deprivation during critical developmental periods.
Long Definition
Deprivation amblyopia, bilateral (H53.013) is a type of amblyopia ex anopsia affecting both eyes simultaneously. This condition occurs when visual development is impaired due to deprivation of clear visual images during the critical period of visual system development, typically in early childhood. Deprivation amblyopia results from conditions that obstruct or distort visual input to both eyes, such as bilateral congenital cataracts, severe bilateral ptosis, corneal opacities, or other media opacities that prevent normal visual stimulation. Unlike other forms of amblyopia, deprivation amblyopia is considered the most severe form and can result in profound visual impairment if not treated promptly. The bilateral nature means both visual pathways are affected, making early detection and intervention critical for optimal visual outcomes.
Area of Body
Eyes (Bilateral) - Visual System
- Bilateral visual pathways
- Occipital cortex (visual processing centers)
- Retina and optic pathways of both eyes
- Affects the visual cortex development bilaterally

Clinical Considerations
- Early intervention is critical: The visual system is most plastic during early childhood; treatment outcomes decline significantly after age 7-8
- Treat underlying cause first: Address cataracts, ptosis, or other obstructive conditions before amblyopia therapy
- Bilateral involvement typically more severe: Requires aggressive treatment approach compared to unilateral cases
- Monitor compliance: Success depends heavily on patient/family adherence to treatment protocols
- Document visual acuity: Regular VA measurements both eyes are essential for treatment monitoring
Documentation Requirements
- Specify “bilateral” involvement clearly
- Document visual acuity measurements for both eyes
- Note underlying cause of deprivation (cataracts, ptosis, corneal opacity, etc.)
- Include age at diagnosis and treatment initiation
- Document previous treatments attempted
- Record response to therapy with objective measurements
- Include family history if relevant
- Note compliance with prescribed treatment regimen
