DEFINITION of enophthalmos

Enophthalmos is a posterior displacement of the eyeball within the orbit in an antero-posterior plane. It is due to either enlargement of the bony orbit and/or reduction of the orbital content in relation to each other. This condition produces the clinical appearance of a sunken eye and may result from an absolute reduction of orbital tissue, a relative reduction of tissue, or enlargement of the orbital cavity. The globe itself is typically normal in enophthalmos

ETYMOLOGY of enophthalmos

greek - Greek origin: From en- (within, inside) + ophthalmos (eye)

  • The term literally means “within the eye” or “eye sunk in
  • First used in medical terminology to describe the inward displacement of the globe within the orbital socket
